dolphin song laments the extinction of the Yangtze River white dolphins, also known as the baiji. One of the few freshwater dolphin species in the world, they inhabited the Yangtze for millions of years, long before humans arrived.
Due to more recent industrialization and pollution in and around the Yangtze, including the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, the dolphins were declared "functionally extinct" in 2006.
